Bob Marshall-Andrews MP has today published a letter in the Independent, decrying the proposed bill which will allow people to be detained for 42 days without trial or charge. He identifies 'dangerous, and possibly deadly, misconceptions growing among loyal ministers and backbencj MPs' Here is my response , which was also published in the Independent today: As an ex Royal Marine I agree wholeheartedly with both the content and spirit of this article. This measure is a preparation for internment within the UK. In addition to the points made by Mr Marshall-Andrews, this bill provides for secret inquests and inquiries. For instance it would give Ms Smith the power to hold inquests without jurors and replace coroners of whom she disapproves. This is ominous when you consider how many coroners have recently spoken out against government behaviour (whether dealing with troops dying in Iraq, Nimrod safety or citizens killed by the police). It is better to act now to halt the onward rush of tyranny, than to have to deal with it later (as we did at Nuremburg).
