There is both a doubly delicious irony in the selection of Donald Trump as the next President of the United States and a certain historical resonance.
Irony is to be found in Trump's appeal to the 'downtrodden masses' as their champion against the banks, billionaires and bailouts. A mob-connected billionaire, who mastered the art of persuading banks to support his wealth extraction through bankruptcy, will look after 'the little guy'. As they say - 'gimme a break'!
The second dash of irony, seasoned with historical resonance, is more subtle. Trump's family can be traced back to Kallstadt, Germany. His first wife, Ivana, came from Zlin in the former Czechoslovakia, and his present wife, Melania, was born in Novo Mesto, Slovenia.
The Vandals were a Germanic tribe (originally thought to have arrived from Scandinavia) who dominated eastern Europe (Poland, Germany and a large part of what was to become the Austro-Hungarian Empire).
Thus we have Trump from Germany and two of his wives born in ancient Vandal territory. Trump is clearly a modern day Vandal!
Of course, the Vandals are most famous for sacking Rome in 455 AD, and accelerating the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. And now we have a modern-day Vandal, famous for 'sacking' people, as President of the United States! Oh! ... irony of ironies!
This blog anticipated Trump's victory, and in March predicted that he would accelerate the break-up of the United States as it splinters under the weight of it's serious social divisions.
Trump has a history of placing personal gain and profit first. After seventy years, that will not change. He will not make decisions based upon what is best for the USA, but rather upon what is best for Donald Trump.
For example, more hawkish American strategists relish his recent phone call with the President of Taiwan as an example of his unpredictability, a brilliant strategy to keep China off-balance.
Au contraire, it was not at all unpredictable. Trump wants to build luxury hotels in Taiwan - it is only natural that he would take the opportunity to develop a relationship with Taiwan's president! The same is true for Russia, where he has unsuccessfully sought to grow his business for twenty years.
Trump will do what is best for Trump. What America should remember is that he has a habit of bankrupting his businesses for personal gain - and being elected President means that the USA has become his latest acquisition!
America, get ready to be 'Sacked'!
(By the way, this Blog does not support the apocalyptic view that we are doomed to a catastrophic social collapse and that we end in a desperate fight for survival. We have a vision of emergent, autonomous, interconnected, sustainable communities - maximizing our capacity for wealth creation and humanity. More of this in a later post.)
