World War III is on it's way - according to a recent poll of Western opinion. A cursory glance at recent headlines suggests it may be so. There are countless examples of hysterical outbursts against the evils of Russia or China or both.
Old cold-war warriors are champing at the bit - nostrils flared as they rail against the dangers of The Soviet Union, which of course only exists in the familiar recesses of their aggressive minds. Blind to their own saber-rattling, they see threats and danger everywhere. And they are ready to fight - at least, they are ready for someone else to fight on their behalf!
Yet they are deluded, and believe their own propaganda. For example, the irresistible might of the US military is exalted - yet, when did the USA last defeat anybody? The Taliban - no, Al Quaeda - no, the VietCong - no, Cuba - no, North Korea - no, Hitler - no (that would be Russia). Ah, but let's not forget mighty Grenada - defeated by that great Warrior Chieftain (B-Movie Actor) Ronald Reagan!
Beams and Motes come to mind. For there is often a religious fervor associated with this lust for aggression. Which seems somehow appropriate, considering how dramatically the human mind is evolving away from the kind of hierarchical, top-down control systems upon which both war and religion depend.
To understand this we have to look below the surface, past the propaganda which every day attempts to refresh our delusions.
We are racing into a post-capitalist, connected, networked world. A world wherein many, many goods and services are for free. A world whose values and attitudes are closer to the traditional Gift Economy than to either capitalism or socialism.
Our sense of Self is changing. We evolved from the individual identity of our Ontological Self, through the development of language, to develop our Social Self. What a difference that has wrought - just look around at the world we have constructed together - from hydro-electric dams to dental surgery to instant coffee.
Shakespeare's histories described the medieval transition from a feudal economy to a mercantile economy, with all it's attendant civil disruption, murders and wars. But that was nothing as to what is coming now.
It took hundreds of thousands of years for the Social Self to emerge and consolidate - yet the new Cyber Self is bursting on to the scene in a few decades. And it's values, motives and attitudes are radically different.
The cold-war warriors, the religious jihadis (whether Christian or Islamic - they are the same mind-set) all rely on control and restricted information. A biblical zealot requires that you believe every word of the Bible! A cold-war warrior would have you believe every word of the Intelligence Community (now that's an oxymoron!)!
Unquestioning belief is required to maintain social control. Just believe and behave.
This new information rich world is hated by the bigots and zealots because it is turning everything upside down. Young people feel connected globally, they have lost the industrial work ethic and question everything. Even the fundamentals of economic belief do not work as people share products for free or say: 'Here, use this, if you like it, pay me whatever you feel like!'
The warriors and zealots have simply been experimenting with some old alternatives, ways of dealing with the world which may have seemed to work for a while, but which are increasingly past their sell-by dates.
We are witness to the profound evolution of the human mind. If our solitary ape-like ancestor was the resting point of the descent of consciousness into physical form, our history has been one of reconnection. Of rediscovering oneness. Of ascent.
We have evolved through family units, small communities, tribes and global societies through a spiritual impulse to recognize ourselves in each other. At all points on this journey, we have benefited from helping one another. At no point have we advanced by denigrating or demeaning each other.
Finding common cause such that we magnify each other feels good. There is much that is beautiful to be shared. Love, kindness and empathy provide the means to build this new world.
