Here is a scurrilous little conspiracy theory - all about money, power, resources and geopolitics, as usual.
China and Africa. The Cheney approach has dominated US foreign policy for years - a significant intention of which is to ensure that no other country challenges US supremacy (good luck with that!!). As this article from 2011 shows, China has been doing that very thing, in Africa, for some time.
Motivation. US corporations are hungry to get control of the immense mineral and other resources in Africa at the same time as the geo-political strategists want to keep China out. That is an unstoppable combination in the US (where corporations are classed as 'citizens' with democratic and religious rights).
Ebola Patent. The UK's top public health doctor recently lambasted the international drug companies for not coming up with an antidote to Ebola. For once, this blog has some sympathy with the pharmaceutical companies. They could not produce the vaccine even if they wanted to. The US government owns the patent (since 2008) to the current (Zaire) strain of Ebola!!
Marketing pitch. As the Ebola outbreak spreads through West Africa, the White House wines and dines some brutal dictators from that region. No doubt pressing them to accept US military bases and to offer generous terms to US corporations.
Demonstration. The US Army Medical Research Institute's research led to the award of a grant to Mapp Biopharmaceuticals to produce an Ebola serum. By an entirely unorthodox mechanism, without any kind of official approval, the resulting zmapp serum was given to two white Americans who were infected by Ebola.
The Closer. It works! The two patients (whom we presume really were sick) show immediate and significant improvement. Meanwhile dying Africans are desperate to get their hands on the 'miracle' serum. No doubt their governments will promise anything to get protection from this deadly plague.
Anything. Military bases, tax breaks ... Anything.
Of course, this is just another crazy conspiracy theory - we all know that our governments would never do anything like this, would they? ...
... although there was that time in Guatamala when the US Government injected syphilis and gonorrhea into about 1500 otherwise healthy Guatamalan men, women and children. Just so they could study the effects of the disease ...
... then there was the Tuskegee project, where hundreds of poor, black sharecroppers in a rural Alabama community were the subject of a clinical study for over forty years, up until 1972. They were not told that they had syphilis and were not offered any kind of treatment, even though penicillin was available and would have cured them. They were just treated as lab rats ...
... no, this is all just a silly conspiracy theory.
