Not the briar patch, Brer Trump!   August 21, 2017

The news today about how the USS John McCain was rammed by an oil tanker East of Singapore, must have been a serious blow to the US Navy, following as it does the collision of the USS Fitzgerald with a cargo ship in June.

The USS John McCain is one of the most heavily armed destroyers in the world, with an extensive and sophisticated radar system able to deploy a wide array of anti-sub, anti-surface and anti-air missiles.

As such, it was recently chosen to symbolize US dominance of the seas, by cruising close to the Spratley Islands in the South China Sea. This was the third 'freedom of navigation' operation since Trump took office.

Of course, China has repeatedly warned the US against such actions, but champions of such US hubris are satisfied that China simply backed down and lost face .... however, I wonder ....

Do you remember how Google got into trouble when it was making videos for it's StreetView maps? As the camera-mounted vans drove around they also 'accidentally' hoovered up all the wifi passwords and data from the neighborhoods they drove through!

Is it possible that China has created not just a missile defense system around it's new islands but also an electronic shield - a wall of electro-magnetic sensors, which, like the Google cameras, are designed to monitor and probe any systems which come within reach?

There would be no better way of ensuring that a nice sophisticated US navy ship came close, than to tell it to stay away! (A tactic deployed by Brer Rabbit to great effect!)

Hackers would not even need to hack directly into the ship's main computer systems, US Sailors carry smart phones and have laptops with Skype installed so they can call home! Getting access to one of those devices would be an easy first step.

The length of time it would take a ship to sail around the Spratley Islands would provide plenty of opportunity to sniff out weaknesses and gain entry one way or another. This is a good example of obsolescence.

While most of us in the USA are proud of our military and think they are invincible, the reality is that it is designed to fight yesterday's wars. All the guns and bombs are increasingly irrelevant - only useful as a means to siphon tax-payers dollars into the pockets of the Military Industrial Complex.

Meanwhile, smart young twenty-first century minds are taking out sophisticated warships with old cargo-ships and oil tankers.

The Chiefs of Staff must be wetting themselves!
